Late Night Heroics

Sunday 10/9, the Marksmen travelled north to Boston for an evening league match against Ruggles FC at West Roxbury High School.

The match started off tightly contested and in the 5th minute the first card by the referee was produced, a yellow against Marksmen midfielder Roberto Mejia for a mistimed challenge. The first half continued with the Marksmen pressuring the ball often, leading to numerous chances inside in the Ruggles defensive area. Newly signed striker/midfielder Jonathan Mendoza came the closest of the Marksmen to breaking the 0-0 scoreline in the first half with a hard driving shot from outside of the box striking the crossbar. Although possession of the ball favored the Marksmen in the first half 60/40, the first 45 minutes came to a close 0-0.

The second half started off promising for the Marksmen with possession being in the clubs favor but the scoreline remained 0-0 until a Marksmen foul in the 65th minute saw Ruggles FC being given a chance to break the deadlock with a penalty kick being awarded for a foul inside the box. The penalty kick however was sent wide right and the score remained 0-0.

In the 90th minute the deadlock was finally broken as substitute Rodrigo Bento raced down the left wing and crossed the ball into the box which deflected off a defender and over to striker Ivan Pittamiglio who collided with the keeper and the ball, which then fell to oncoming right winer Daniel Vargas who managed to get his foot onto the ball and chipped it into the net for what would be the match winning goal. Less than a minute later the referee blew his whistle and the match was final, 1-0 Marksmen, the clubs first 3 points of the season.
